In the oilfield, the term paraffin is often loosely applied to mean any heavy organic fraction of crude oil which, given the right conditions, can precipitate to form sludges, or deposits. These deposits may contain the true paraffin waxes, resins, gums, asphaltic compounds and others.
These materials have been found to form in virtually all portions of production equipment, from the formation face to the pipeline, resulting in reduced production and increased costs.
